Zambia has received a grant of 292 million dollars from the World Bank to fund the Zambia-Tanzania interconnection project (ZTIP), aimed at improving access to sustainable and affordable energy.

The financing plan will strengthen Zambia's energy sector by increasing the electricity transmission capacity between Zambia and Tanzania, thereby promoting integration between the electricity grids of East and Southern Africa.

Zambia's energy sector faces significant financial challenges that hinder the country's economic growth.

The project complements regional and national efforts to ensure the long-term sustainability of the energy sector while promoting universal access to electricity.

According to Yadviga Semikolenova, head of the World Bank's energy practice for East and Southern Africa, the initiative would strengthen the country's electricity transmission system to support new renewable energy projects and allow for broader access to electricity, she explained.

The Zambia-Tanzania interconnection project marks an important milestone in addressing Zambia's energy challenges while aligning with broader goals of regional energy integration and climate resilience
