Rwanda takes a significant step towards innovation in nuclear energy by signing an agreement with the American company NANO Nuclear Energy Inc.

The Rwanda Atomic Energy Board (RAEB) announced on August 14 that it has signed an agreement with NANO Nuclear Energy Inc., an American company specializing in microreactors, to deploy small modular reactors and microreactors in Rwanda, in East Africa.

These technologies, such as the ZEUS and ODIN reactors, could transform Rwanda's energy landscape by providing a clean and sustainable source of power.

In addition to deploying these technologies, NANO Nuclear is committed to developing the entire nuclear ecosystem of the country. This includes providing technical assistance, training, and implementing educational programs to strengthen local expertise in the nuclear field.

In collaboration with the Cambridge Nuclear Energy Centre in the United Kingdom, the company aims to create a self-sufficient and secure national nuclear industry.

According to Fidele Ndahayo, CEO of the Rwanda Atomic Energy Board, “This agreement positions Rwanda to adopt nuclear technologies when they become available on the market.”

This partnership is part of a series of similar agreements, such as the one signed in 2023 with the German-Canadian nuclear company Dual Fluid for the development of a demonstration reactor in Rwanda. This protocol reinforces Rwanda’s strategy to become a regional leader in advanced nuclear technologies while boosting economic growth.
