During his visit to Rabat on Friday, April 26, the French Minister of Economy, Bruno Le Maire, announced "the beginning of a new era of economic cooperation" between the two countries.
We want to open the era of a new cooperation in the field of decarbonized energy between France and Morocco. This will include hydrogen, wind, and solar energy," said the French Minister of Economy after a meeting with his Moroccan counterpart, Nadia Fettah Alaoui
Bruno Le Maire proposed "cooperation in the nuclear field, with small or medium-sized reactors" for Morocco, which does not have such power plants for energy production.
The bet on renewable energies.
Over the past 15 years, the kingdom has heavily invested in renewable energies, which currently supply 38% of the electricity produced, and aims to reach 52% by 2030. The country also hopes to position itself in the green hydrogen market.
Railway mobility was also a central topic in the discussions between the two ministers, as the kingdom aims to extend its high-speed line (LGV) to serve Agadir. The first section of this line, connecting Tangier to Casablanca since 2018, was carried out by the French company Alstom.
According to the French minister, two working groups will be created to address these two aspects of cooperation. Bruno Le Maire is the third French minister to visit Morocco this week as part of the strengthening of relations between the two historical allies, which have been shaken since 2021 by an unprecedented crisis.
