The Tanzanian satellite construction project was revealed last May by President Samia Suluhu Hassan. The latter specified that negotiations were already underway for the implementation of the project. Tanzania has secured a position in orbit for the launch of its first satellite, ICT Minister Nape Nnauye revealed at the conclusion of the World Radiocommunication Conference 2023 (WRC23), which took place from November 20 to November 15. December in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The initiative comes at a time when African governments are showing a growing interest in space programs and increasing investments in the sector. According to the 2022 annual report on the African space industry by Space In Africa, the value of this industry is expected to reach $22.64 billion by 2026, compared to $19.49 billion in 2021. The same report indicates that African nations allocated a total of $534.9 million to space programs in 2022, compared to $523.2 million in 2021
It is worth noting that space technology could be used to enhance the coverage of telecommunications and high-speed Internet services, especially in rural or remote areas that are challenging for mobile operators to access.
